Forgotten Coast IV (Last Known Photograph)

Depicting a scene from Jeff Vandermeer's Acceptance. Accidentally titled ironically as it was the last photo I took before dropping my phone in a giant puddle after I went out to have a cigarette post-painting. Don't smoke.

The Tragedy of Macbeth [2021]

Welcome back to My Year of Shakespeare, this week we're kicking off the Scottish month with Joel Coen's immaculate The Tragedy of Macbeth. I must've watched this fifty or sixty times during the lockdown - I was Going Through It, and also it was a film well suited to falling sleep to, having few overly loud sequences* - and even still I was unable to wring the beauty from this.

*when watched on…

Much Ado About Nothing [1973, New York Shakespeare Festival, dir Joseph Papp/Nick Havinga]

Welcome back to this week's episode of My Year of Shakespeare. Today's entry is available online at the internet archive (for free) if you want to grade my essay in real time. Apologies for anyone who mistakenly watched the 1973 Soviet production, that isn't the one I watched this week, although if that is you, please reach out to let me know where you got it, I've been unable to source a…

No relation to the also-drawn-by-me Robots from the Educational Davis lyric video that Nick still has, apparently, from 2004.

In contrast to a lot of work that would follow, this was all done with tape and blocking, no markers.

Wildcard Saturday: WAYO 104.3FM Fundraiser!

WAYO 104.3FM put out a call for art for their annual fundraiser last month; I entered a few pieces and won — they're using my whale (above) on hoodies, if you donate $150 (one-time) or $15/month recurring!

WAYO is a local volunteer-run station, they play the broadest variety of music in Rochester, and are a breath of fresh air in the iHeartRadio/Sinclair media landscape. You should listen and/or…

Forgotten Coast II

Spray Paint on Sheet Metal

12in x 12in

The challenge with spray paint was, at first, every can had opaquing agents in it, so how to work translucency into a piece? One answer I found (ahead of the "better"/universal solution of "just use shader cans, they don't have that stuff") was mixing brands while both were still fresh out the can; Flame [brand] high-pressure cans - the red here - used a…

Anyone But You [2023]

Welcome back to My Year of Shakespeare, we're at the tail end of Much Ado About April with the Glen Powell/Sydney Sweeney romcom Anyone But You, ostensibly based on Much Ado About Nothing. I didn't have a great time with this, but it also was no McLintock in terms of unwatchability.

A Brief Summary

Hey we're doing these again? Neat. Although doesn't that mean it didn't really follow the…

Hot Cocoa

I think this one was just inspired by Beatrix Potter and Brian Jacques, not an actual study. A piece I did in October of that year as I felt the winter approach.

Much Ado About Nothing [1993]

Welcome back to My Year of Shakespeare. On the one hand, it is nice to go back to lighter fare than last month's drink-from-the-firehouse pace of cramming four fairly heavy plays, each of which took a little footwork on my part to properly appreciate, into a single month; On the other hand, I'm not sure this was the cool drink my parched mouth thirsted for.

I have a general principle for…

Not to sound like the single weirdest person on earth but I miss working with harsh solvents. That water was done by layering blue paints and then blasting it with pressurized acetone/cap cleaner, then moving it around with silicone spatulas.

Titus [1999]

Frustratingly, my CMS, Ghost, decided to throw out my first draft of this. It was better written but they were unable to recover it. So, once more from the top, but with expedience and, unfortunately, brevity: I did not know how dead-on I was last week, saying that this would be the weird one. Welcome back to My Year of Shakespeare, this week we are watching Julie Taymor's Titus, a movie that…
