How about those Apple price increases?

Apple CEO Tim Cook warned us that price increases would be coming, and here they are. Though iPhone, Apple Watch, and AirPods remain untouched for now.

I'm not going to break down the prices here, go see that on AppleInsider. But the Apple Vision Pro going up to $3,699 is certainly not great.

Price changes are around $100 to $300 for each device with a few exceptions. Honestly, it could have…

As expected, Snap Specs are total garbage

The reporters over at 404Media are on a roll, as usual, this week. I'll have more thoughts on their AI piece later, but for now, let's talk about those Snaptacles.

I'll give Snap this: they make a compelling demo reel. When I watched the mostly obnoxious presentation where Evan Spiegel pretended to be Steve Jobs presenting the future of humanity, I was impressed by some of the visuals.

Some…

Steam Machine is an encapsulation of the state of gaming

I enjoyed reading Aftermath's Chris Person discuss the Steam Machine and how it represents a noble and needed move in gaming. It's the Linux gaming machine that treats gamers like adults that own their tech and their games, but it couldn't have come at a worse time.

It starts at $1,049 and costs $1,500 if you want 2TB and a controller. It's underpowered at that price, but spec-wise, it’s…

iPhone Fold might already be delayed

I want to share my little conspiracy theory here so it's written down somewhere. It sure seems like that iPhone Fold isn't coming in 2026, and indications are mounting.

Not only has the supply chain not said anything about mass production beginning, there are repeated reports of issues in testing the device. Yet, we're hearing from at least a couple of adamant sources with mixed histories that…

'Marathon,' my first extraction shooter

I played Destiny when it first came out and was surprised by the roller coaster that was that game's launch. Remember Peter Dinklage as Ghost?

Destiny 2 was a lot of fun, but I fell off after a few expansions. It wasn't that the game was bad, but other games held my attention better.

Now, with the death of Destiny 2, I became curious about Marathon. I ignored its launch if only because what I…

Siri AI and personal context

It's busy season for us Apple writers, so forgive me for any neglect to the blog. Today, I'd like to briefly share some more of my experiences with the new Siri AI.

So far, I have been trying various interactions related to finding out information from the web or making plans. One example I tried was asking it to list all fast food restaurants within 10 miles, it did so using an image from Apple…

Five new Apple Foundation Models and the privacy promise

WWDC 2026 may have been a different format, but we still got a ton of new features and design changes on top of the revamped AI. It's a busy week at AppleInsider, so I don't have long to write here.

First, I wanted to take a bit of a victory lap. As I wrote yesterday, Apple's upgraded Apple Foundation Models that run on your devices and in Private Cloud Compute don't have a drop of Gemini in…

HilliTech's Newsletter: Three sleeps till dub dub

It's almost time for Apple to save face in the AI race or step on yet another rake in the public eye. While I don't really care much for AI, I do believe it is important for Apple to compete in some way, shape, or form.

Here are some stories I'd like to share this week:

The URL For Summer Games Fest, A Common Typo, Now Redirects To The Transgender Law Center“The silly typo website redirects to…

State of Play

The first week of June has become quite the event for nerds that happen to like Apple and video games. PlayStation just had its State of Play, Summer Game Fest is Friday, and Apple's WWDC keynote is Monday.

I remember being about 13 years old and losing my mind when E3 was occurring. At the time, I didn't have access to a computer, so if I didn't catch things live, I missed them entirely.…

One week till Dub Dub

Apple is doing its usual pre-event promotion through the Developer app. I'm quite excited for this year's announcements, as they're sure to give us quite a few "finallys."

Here's the short video they shared:

I know it's silly marketing type stuff, but I always enjoy the ecosystem-wide things Apple does to hype things up before an event. Here are some direct links to what's being offered…

Siri's Dynamic Island

After the limited Apple Intelligence launch in 2024 didn't go Apple's way, it was left with a rainbow animation and a less useful Siri. It seems the Siri animation is changing again in iOS 27 to reflect the new underlying models and uses it will have.

Bloomberg's Mark Gurman has clearly had access to a pre-release version of iOS 27, either directly or through a source, and that has been all but…

Gaming is great on Apple Vision Pro if you've got an additional $1,000 in gear

Apple Vision Pro is a futuristic mixed reality headset with lots of power thanks to the M5. The high-resolution displays make everything crisp and clear.

However, as I've reiterated many times over the past two years, developer support is nonexistent.

Those that do bother supporting the platform have been doing some amazing work. I wrote about Portal, a PlayStation Remote Play client that works…

New Apple history podcast will be a must listen

Designed in California: An Apple History Podcast is a new show from the minds of Jason Snell and Myke Hurley. It just hit Kickstarter and promises at least 30 episodes over 12 months.

The funding hasn't started just yet, but go ahead and sign up to be notified for the launch on Kickstarter.

This is the 50th anniversary of Apple, one of the most important companies of our era. Across the…

Indigo is the perfect Bluesky app, oh, and it supports Mastodon too

I've been using Indigo since it launched on May 12, and it's the best Bluesky client out there. The fact that it also works with Mastodon and supports cross posting is a bonus.

I like Mastodon, but when it was clear that Bluesky was going to be the more user-friendly option that would attract non-nerds, I shifted my focus. However, not everyone made the jump.

When I started writing this blog on…

Apple's week May 22: OpenBS

OpenAI is a financial disaster, Google is putting the final nail in the search coffin, and Epic Games has no ideas how lawsuits work on this week's newsletter.

Where in the world is the iPhone Fold?

It is only a few days away from Apple's WWDC 2026, and there have been zero hardware leaks of the iPhone Fold. I still remain skeptical about it releasing in 2026.

Yes, this is a republished piece from May 21, but we continue to see conflicting stories about the iPhone Fold and its production, but little else. I shared a similar post in February, and I expected some kind of revelation by now,…

visionOS 27 is Apple's chance to show it cares about Apple Vision Pro

Apple casually tossing a trailer out for an upcoming Immersive Video reminded me how little it advertises Apple Vision Pro and its functionality.

There have been very few ads for Apple Vision Pro, and I'm not sure if any actually aired on television. The closest thing we got to a full ad (that wasn't just a supercut of the keynote or photo of a person wearing it) was an excellent homage to…

A leak in the WWDC

There have been a lot of iOS 27 and Apple Intelligence feature leaks lately. I've been making the claim that a lot of what has been leaked is "predictable" or "obvious."

When I say this, it isn't to shut down the leaker or tell them not to leak, it's to say that the leak itself isn't interesting. As someone that has followed Apple leakers and the culture around it, I find these increasingly…

Apple & OpenAI relationship thankfully in hot water

OpenAI's Sam Altman once considered Elon Musk a worthy business partner, and that's all I ever needed to know about the individual. Well, that and his double-popped collar polo shirt ensemble he wore on stage at an Apple event in 2008.

My opinion somehow only worsened in recent years as OpenAI hyperbolically declared AI as the simultaneous end and savior of humanity. Altman was a snake oil…

Double Fireball

John Gruber, of Daring Fireball and other fames, shared some additional thoughts on the state of leaks from a particular leaker.

I've already beaten the dead horse about Apple Vision Pro not being dead and the state of rumors that are basically tabloid gossip. But even as I share my thoughts, Gruber does what he does best and says my thoughts more clearly and hammers the point home much…

Apple's week May 8: Pride and Encryption

If you're an Apple fan you can't help but take pride in the fact that it may be the only company still operating normally under the current regime.

Permanent silly season

I'm not always going to have time to write 1,000 words about Contacts management and the like, so here's some stuff I'm thinking about today.
