It would be the largest transfer fee Real Madrid has ever paid in its history,’ Perez told Horizonte last Thursday.\n\nWhen asked to name his transfer target, Perez replied: ‘[Michael] Olise is a great player but it’s not Olise, it’s not [Jeremy] Doku either.\n\n## All the World Cup action\n\nGet everything you need to know about the World Cup – England updates, the games to watch and stories you missed – in five minutes, at 1pm, every day. Sign up here.\n\n‘We’re going to make a significant offer, at least around €150m (£129.4m).\n\nFlorentino Perez was re-elected as Real Madrid president on Sunday (Reuters)\n\n‘He needs to be a player from midfield who can go forward. And it’s not [Erling] Haaland.\n\n‘The player is not from the Premier League, and the first thing we’ll do is talk to the club.\n\n‘It’s a signing meant to generate excitement because that’s what it’s all about, generating excitement.’\n\nMadrid have announced that their target is Alvarez, who is also wanted by Arsenal and Barcelona.\n\nThe Spanish champions have already had a €100m (£86.4m) offer for Alvarez rejected.\n\nAtletico Madrid response to Real Madrid’s rejected bid for Julian Alvarez\n\nArsenal, meanwhile, have held initial talks to sign Alvarez but the Argentina international is holding out for a move to Barcelona and is not considering a return to the Premier League after leaving Manchester City two years ago.\n\nIn a statement released on Tuesday evening, Madrid said: ‘Real Madrid CF announces that, following today’s Board of Directors meeting, it has made an offer of 150 million euros to Club Atlético de Madrid for the federative rights of the player Julián Álvarez.\n\n‘After studying and evaluating it, Atlético de Madrid has thanked the club for the offer, made within the framework of the good relations existing between both clubs, and has rejected it, referring to the player’s release clause.’\n\nIn their response to Madrid’s statement, Atletico replied on X with five laughing face emojis.\n\nIn a follow-up statement, Atletico said: ‘Official statement with our clarifications regarding the official statement from our neighbors\n\n‘@realmadrid: 1. They cut out the part of the Pope’s video where he said he was an Atleti fan too.\n\n‘2. You must have confused education with gratitude, but to leave no doubt: we don’t thank you for anything.\n\n‘3. We neither study nor consider any offer for Julián.\n\n‘4. How could we not get along, when you make us laugh even more than @FCBarcelona_es does.’\n\n**For more stories like this, check our sport page**.\n\n**Follow Metro Sport for the latest news on**Facebook,** Twitter and Instagram**.\n\nComment now Comments \nAdd Metro as a Preferred Source on Google\nAdd as preferred source\n",
