The invention relates to a driver assistance device (2) for a motor vehicle (1) with a navigation unit (4) for determining a position of the motor vehicle (1), with a display unit (3) for displaying a change in driving direction, with a control unit (5) for controlling the display unit (3) as a function of the navigation unit (4), wherein the control unit (5) is designed to automatically activate the display unit (3) when the motor vehicle (1) approaches a junction (9), an intersection or a predetermined position of a lane change at which, according to a route (8) stored in the navigation unit (4), a change in driving direction of the motor vehicle (1) is to be expected, and wherein the navigation unit (4) is designed to automatically store at least one preferred route (8) on the basis of a plurality of positions of the motor vehicle (1) determined by the navigation unit (4) and the control unit (5) is designed to automatically activate the display unit (3) in a support operating mode when the motor vehicle (1) approaches the junction (9), the intersection or the predetermined position of a lane change stored in the navigation unit (4) on the preferred route (8) stored by the navigation unit (4), at which according to the stored preferred route (8) a change in driving direction of the motor vehicle (1) is to be expected, in order to provide an automatic activation of a change in driving direction which requires particularly few operating actions by an operator.
