Bill Gates will be testifying before Congress later today about his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein, a man who he once described as a “friend and financial guru”. Bill Gates is a figure who has been a big presence in public life for decades and decades and decades. Before he became the archetypical example of the “good billionaire”, this also isn’t his first time being deeply unpopular, and _that_ controversy also centred on a congressional hearing. I want to look at the rise and fall and rise and fall of Bill Gates, a story which in some regards reflects the ups and downs of the society which surrounds it.
