It wasn't long ago that Northern Illinois had numerous horse race tracks and a thriving industry that included trainers, track workers, horse breeders and agriculture. Now, Hawthorne is all that's left, and it is on life support.
A San Francisco-based nonprofit agreed to buy the former race track for $175 million and transfer it to the East Bay Regional Park District, creating a huge new shoreline park.
The owners of Hawthorne Race Course in south suburban Stickney are filing for bankruptcy, according to a news release Friday.
