I've had a Raspberry Pi Zero W sitting under my soundbar for about a year. The job description was simple: be the one device on the soundbar's Bluetooth allowlist so I never have to repair anything, and play whatever audio my MacBook shoves at it. That's it. No screen, no DAC, no hat. Just a tiny board acting as a permanent Bluetooth client.
Getting there involved more yak-shaving than I'd like…
After recently rebuilding the 4RoadService web server on Debian 13, Browsershot wasn't working right. It wasn't working at all. We run Laravel on a slightly old-school LAMP setup with PHP-FPM, and run the Laravel workers as the www-data user, the same user that runs the web server, so that user needed to be able to...
With hardware prices going through the roof, it's not a great time to be a gamer. Earlier this year, when Valve announced that it's Steam Machine–its Cube-shaped Linux powered desktop gaming machine–was going to be delayed due to a shortage of RAM and storage components, geeks everywhere groaned. — Read the rest

Okay today I managed to accidentally trigger “locked” function keys on my rather new M70 RK Royal Kludge. There is a modifier hotkey for this that I didn’t know of before (FN + LEFT CTRL) and I was lost for a hot minute how to turn it off again. Ah well, we’re still getting to know each […]

Previously, I looked at using the Linux video loopback system from the command line. The basic trick was simple enough: capture video from a real camera, process it with something …read more
This was a particularly busy month for me in terms of Debian contributions.
It started with a week in Hamburg for the MiniDebConf. I talked to many colleagues face-to-face and worked on various bugs and maintenance tasks. I’m pleased to have finally found the time to reproduce and fix the boot-time crashes in the parallel port
subsystem that have been reported many times recently.

I have a busy day ahead of me, but not too busy for Pook-Emu Bee links. Before getting to links from around the web, I note that I just published the sixth and final part of my New Leaf Journal sixth birthday project, Be the Blogger You Want to Be (Or Read). Now watch me follow my own advice.
There’s a line in a [Weird Al] (no relation) song that says, “I upgrade my system at least twice a day…” I know how that is. I primarily use a …read more
