Red Flag Warning issued in parts of Alaska due to lightning threat

A Red Flag Warning remains in effect across large parts of Interior Alaska until 22:00 AKDT (06:00 UTC June 22) on June 21, 2026. Scattered thunderstorms capable of producing lightning along with low humidity, hot temperatures, and gusty winds to create critical fire weather conditions in the region.

Lightning compilation video reveals how storms cause fires, explosions, and power loss

This lightning compilation video captures what happens when the atmosphere turns volatile. A storm rolls in, looking routine, and then, suddenly, a tree is vaporized, a building is on fire, and the power goes out. It's a reminder of just how extreme lightning can be — and why taking cover matters. — Read the rest

Interesting Field Work: Treetops glowing during storms captured for the first time

It’s nearly invisible to the naked eye but our instruments give rise to a vision of swaths of scintillating corona glowing as thunderstorms pass overhead

Stealth Superstorms Reveal Lightning on Jupiter: Beyond the Superbolt

NASA’s Juno spacecraft passed north to south (yellow track) over Jupiter’s atmosphere in August 2022, detecting a cluster of radio pulses from lightning (turquoise circles). A background map from the Hubble Space Telescope identified the lightning source as an isolated “stealth superstorm.” The inset shows a previous stealth superstorm plume from JunoCam data. Credit:…

The Purple Glow of Forests: Researchers Observe Electrical Discharges from Trees for the First Time

A new study reveals that thunderstorms may electrify entire forests. Researchers detected faint corona discharges leaping between leaves, producing ultraviolet flashes across treetops, an invisible light show that could influence atmospheric chemistry and subtly shape the lives of trees.

Bolt Hunter Wants to Be the Storm Photographer’s Best Friend

Motion Horizons LLC has announced Bolt Hunter, a purpose-built lightning camera trigger that it describes as “the most advanced lightning photography tool ever built,” designed to address some of the most persistent challenges in storm photography, including missed daytime strikes, overexposed nighttime frames, and inconsistent shutter timing.

I Can See Clearly Now/The Rain

There is an Asian elm tree that I can see out of my office window. In the winter, its branches trace intricate lines against the pale sky. Every few years, an arborist casts ropes through the branches and climbs up to trim the tree. One year, he pointed out a fork in the trunk with […]
