Why aren’t policymakers listening?

Recently I’ve been obsessed with a simple question: why aren’t policymakers listening - more, better and to the right people?

To explain:

  • By policymakers I mean those making policy and shaping strategy in upstream policymaking settings rather than those more involved with implementation and service delivery
  • By listening I mean deep active listening to end-users and citizens - rather…

Steeling themselves

A glut of subsidised steel is forcing a reckoning, and the producers with the leanest books and the smallest treasuries are the ones to pay. Veysel Yayan did the sums in January and did not care for the total. On the 13th the general secretary of the Turkish Steel Producers’ Association told S&P Global Platts […]

The Misconception of Japan as a Small Island Nation—and the Responsibility It Entails (Part 1)

The Illusion of a “Small Country” Seen from Tokyo Bay

On a June morning, white tanks lined an LNG receiving terminal in Tokyo Bay, and a tanker from the open sea approached the quay. Its cargo was not extracted inside Japan. It was fuel drawn in by contracts and credit from the Middle East, Australia, the United States, and Southeast Asia. The lights of the Tokyo metropolitan area, factory…

What is the effect on the Human mind from AI?

In the U.S., it seems like it just turned out that way as a result of a tug-of-war. Still, the conclusion is the same: it’s on hold.
One reason I’m holding off on AI regulation is simply because it’s like playing on extra-hard mode…

Just off the top of my head, here are some of the known hurdles:

Swedish schools ditch devices, return to books

The Swedish government is battling declining literacy rates and has focused on bringing back physical books to schools and encouraging handwriting, the BBC reports. However, the return of analogue devices has drawn criticism from technology companies, teachers and computer scientists, who say the approach will limit students’ future employment opportunities and even harm the country’s […]

Borrowed time

Romania’s two decades of income catch-up are under threat from a fiscal deficit that would give most finance ministers nightmares. In 2025, Romania finally joined the Schengen Area, a milestone that felt to many Romanians like belated acknowledgement of the country’s transformation since the 1990s. GDP per capita, measured in purchasing power terms, has risen […]

European Economies Are Not Stagnating

Europe’s GDP is keeping pace with America’s just fine. Why do we constantly hear the opposite?

Since COVID-19, a narrative about economic stagnation in Europe alongside booming productivity in America — “Eurosclerosis” — has taken hold. It’s not true. (Jonathan Brady / PA Images via Getty Images)
